PR petition by Southend Malayalee Association

Southend Malayalee Association presented the petition against proposed immigration bill to Southend West MP Mr.David Amess to review Permanent Residency rule changes, which will affect Malayalees and other nationals living in the UK.

SMA representatives presented the petition and discussed the points which gone to affect us in the proposed bill, the main subject raised is to reconsider the clause that would affect the Permanent Residency (PR) for the people who has been here for last four years and below, who are hoping to get there PR by next year considering the current set of rules.

It was a proud moment for all of us at Southend Malayalee Association, when our MP Mr.David Amess expressed our concerns in British Parliament on 18th December 2008. Respected MP mentioned about our petition against the recent changes in the immigration rules, which is going to affect lot of malayalees already in the UK.

David Amess (Southend West, Conservative)

I have the honour to present a petition on behalf of 100 families concerning their views on the Green Paper "The Path to Citizenship: Next Steps in Reforming the Immigration System". It states:

The Humble Petition of the Malayalee community of Southend-on-Sea, Essex,

Sheweth: that the proposal in the Home Office's Green Paper 'The Path to Citizenship' to increase the minimum period of temporary residency on the path to permanent settlement from five years to as much as ten years would not be fair to immigrants already in the United Kingdom who had anticipated they could permanently settle after only five years, and would result in one of the longest delays in access to citizenship in the European Union.

Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House do urge the Secretary of State for the Home Department to allow those already in the United Kingdom to keep their entitlement to settle as per the existing rules.

And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, &c.
