Southend Malayalee Association organised a Seminar on ’Heart & Health a
New Life’ funded by Biritish Heart Foundation
at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff on Sea on 08th
May 2010. Mr. Sabu Kuriakose, (Trustee SMA) opened the
seminar with an introductory speech about the need for
this seminar and its importance in our daily lives. The
Seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Velmurugan ( General
Practitioner & Borough Councillor), who spoke about SMA
and its vision towards the community. He also praised
the organisers for organising such Health Aware campaign
which he felt was very important both in terms of
educating and bringing about the Change in Life styles.
Dr. Peter Roach From Southend NHS University Hospital
was invited to do a presentation on ‘Causes
of Heart Related ailments and Symptoms’.
Unlike typical lectures, this was different in its
presentation and tempo. Dr. Peter gave a splendid see
through into the lives, causes and symptoms of Heart
Related ailments within Asian population.
After a small recess wherein tea and refreshments were
served to the guests and public, Ms. Kate Taylor,
cardiac specialist nurse, presented her speech on ‘ Prevention,
Treatment, Rehabilitation of Cardio vascular diseases’
which was really an eye opener to the whole community.
Lots of facts about procedures and diagnostics in
relation to Heart Ailments were explained in-depth which
was really educative. Ms. Jolly Barber, another
Specialist Nurse from NHS, humbly volunteered educate
the Asian community on the topic “Healthy Eating”.
Although, there are so many agencies which deal with
this particular issue, Ms. Jolly Barber’s approach of
targeting a specific community pin pointing their food
habits and its merits and demerits was really
spellbound. Last but not the least, Mr.Tony, Manager of
Non Smoking Team South East Essex - PCT, presented a
lecture on the ill effects of smoking and the impact of
it on our Heart. The No Smoking Team also had their
stall set up in the conference hall which provided
breath analyser tests, advice and leaflets to the
general public.

of Thanks was delivered by Mr. Pradeep S Kuruvilla,
(Secretary of SMA) and Mr. Jiji Thomas , (Vice
president of SMA) presented a mementos and gifts to the
guests.
